{"id":1385,"date":"2017-08-21T17:00:27","date_gmt":"2017-08-21T22:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beckypalmer.thecomputerguy.bz\/?p=1385"},"modified":"2017-08-16T21:08:16","modified_gmt":"2017-08-17T02:08:16","slug":"college-advise-from-an-old-person-2-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beckypalmer.me\/?p=1385","title":{"rendered":"College Advise from an Old Person 2.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2 years ago I wrote about 5 things I wish I had known when I started college. \u00a0Feel free to review those here:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/beckypalmer.thecomputerguy.bz\/2015\/08\/college-advice-from-an-old-person\/\">http:\/\/beckypalmer.thecomputerguy.bz\/2015\/08\/college-advice-from-an-old-person\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, while all of those things are still 100% true the world has changed a lot since then and so I felt that there are a few new things to consider, things that weren&#8217;t on the radar 20 odd years ago. \u00a0Things like:<\/p>\n<p>#1 Get off your damn phone. \u00a0Do not spend all your time posting selfies on Instagram or on Facetime with your high school BFF. \u00a0Get out there and have actual experiences with other actual humans.<\/p>\n<p>#2 \u00a0Think two or three times before you post anything on social media. \u00a0Nothing you put out there- not even on Snapchat- is ever truly gone. \u00a0That party selfie you post in October could be what keeps you from getting that internship you really want in June, or that great job 3 Junes from now.<\/p>\n<p>#3 Make a concerted effort to talk to people who are really different from you. \u00a0People who are a different religion. \u00a0A different race. \u00a0Come from a different country. \u00a0Have different political views. \u00a0 The only people you should actively avoid (besides criminals) are the ones who demand &#8220;safe spaces&#8221; where only their views are allowed. \u00a0That is an antithesis of what college, and the First Amendment, are all about.<\/p>\n<p>#4 Many colleges offer help with study skills and the like during orientation or during the first weeks of school. \u00a0Some schools even offer an entire class for incoming freshmen.
