{"id":2867,"date":"2019-12-30T17:15:38","date_gmt":"2019-12-30T23:15:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beckypalmer.thecomputerguy.bz\/?p=2867"},"modified":"2019-12-29T18:36:00","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T00:36:00","slug":"advice-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beckypalmer.me\/?p=2867","title":{"rendered":"Advice &#8211; the good, the bad, and the ugly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">Tis the season for &#8220;year in review&#8221; and &#8220;<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">new<\/span>\u00a0year, new me&#8221; blog posts and status updates.\u00a0 Some are cute, some are poignant, some are downright annoying (<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">fact-<\/span>\u00a0NO ONE cares about your workout routines or fad diet).\u00a0 \u00a0But, the end of the year does seem to make everyone a little introspective, including me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">Don&#8217;t\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">worry-<\/span>\u00a0I&#8217;m not going to bust out another Year In Review post.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pretty much an open book and if you wonder what I did and what I&#8217;m proud of in 2019 just look through what I&#8217;ve written this year.\u00a0 OR ask me about my niece and\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">nephew-<\/span>\u00a0I can talk about them forever!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Instead, I&#8217;m thinking about advice.\u00a0 Specifically, advice that I&#8217;ve been given over the years.\u00a0 While it was all well-meaning, some of it has turned out to have been great and some of it has turned out to have been awful.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mceItemHidden\">Let&#8217;s start with the good.\u00a0 The best advice I ever got came from my\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">dad-<\/span>\u00a0no surprise there.\u00a0 He told me when I was quite young &#8220;Don&#8217;t let anyone tell you that you can&#8217;t do something just because you&#8217;re a girl&#8221;.\u00a0 This was pretty powerful in the mid 80s when he said it and I still smile thinking about it now.\u00a0 And I&#8217;ve shared it with my niece already.\u00a0 She&#8217;s only 8 but it&#8217;s never too early!\u00a0 \u00a0He also gave me these\u00a0<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">nuggets-<\/span>\u00a0&#8220;The time you don&#8217;t think you can afford to go on vacation is when you need it the most&#8221;.\u00a0 &#8220;Do the right thing every time&#8221;.\u00a0 &#8220;God is always in control &#8211; even when it doesn&#8217;t look like it&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve gotten a lot of bad advice over the years too.\u00a0 Probably the worst was from multiple sources before my first marriage was the classic &#8220;Never go to bed angry&#8221;.\u00a0 I cannot tell you the number of miserable nights my ex and I had because we thought this was the best way to handle disagreements.\u00a0 \u00a0We really need to trash this one for good.\u00a0 Other bad ideas that came my way?\u00a0 \u00a0&#8220;A baby will fix your marriage&#8221;. &#8220;Never own a car with over 100,000 miles on it&#8221;. &#8220;Just put it on a credit card and pay it off over time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So as we go into this week of nostalgia and new diets, what&#8217;s the best and worst advice you ever got?\u00a0 \u00a0Did you get any bad advice it took you a while to realize was bad like I did?\u00a0 Let&#8217;s talk about it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tis the season for &#8220;year in review&#8221; and &#8220;new\u00a0year, new me&#8221; blog posts and status updates.\u00a0 Some are cute, some are poignant, some are downright annoying (fact-\u00a0NO ONE cares about your workout routines or fad diet).\u00a0 \u00a0But, the end of the year does seem to make everyone a little introspective, including me.
