{"id":3382,"date":"2020-10-19T17:00:57","date_gmt":"2020-10-19T22:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beckypalmer.wpengine.com\/?p=3382"},"modified":"2020-10-18T18:23:59","modified_gmt":"2020-10-18T23:23:59","slug":"doing-something-normally-in-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beckypalmer.me\/?p=3382","title":{"rendered":"Doing Something Normally in 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To put it mildly, 2020 has not been a very good year for most people.\u00a0 I know folks who got married, had babies, got promotions, and other good things, but for most of us this has been a year we can&#8217;t wait to forget.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I did recently that IS normal for me was that I voted early.\u00a0 I live and work in different counties, and I&#8217;m fortunate to live in a state that offers early in person voting, so I have taken advantage of that more often than not over the last 14 years.\u00a0 And if you live in a state that has this option, I am encouraging you to do the same, especially if you aren&#8217;t familiar with the absentee\/ vote by mail process in your state.<\/p>\n<p>The most obvious reason why I encourage this is time.\u00a0 Many areas are expecting record or near record voter turn out and\/ or a reduction in polling places,\u00a0 which will lead to long lines on election day.\u00a0 In most places you will find no lines at all if you go vote today.\u00a0 If there is a line, it will be a fraction of what it will be on election day.<\/p>\n<p>The other obvious reason is social distancing.\u00a0 Since I&#8217;ve already voted, I&#8217;m one less person standing in line or even being in the building on election day.\u00a0 The more of us who do this, the safer everyone is.<\/p>\n<p>The third reason may not work for everyone.\u00a0 But I find that after I vote, I find political ads a lot less annoying.\u00a0 They no longer have any power over me.\u00a0 Yes, they are still annoying, but weirdly less so.\u00a0 Again, your results may vary.<\/p>\n<p>The last reason I encourage early in person voting is not a great one, but it&#8217;s something we have to deal with- idiots.\u00a0 And by idiots, I mean the people who, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, are still convinced there is something inherently wrong with voting by mail.\u00a0 By voting early in person you are accomplishing everything you would by voting by mail, but you won&#8217;t have those clowns climbing all over you.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s worth something.<\/p>\n<p>But of course, the most important thing is that you DO vote.\u00a0 Regardless of how you do it, regardless of if you did it already or plan to go on Election Day, please vote.\u00a0 There is really no excuse not to, not even in this dumpster fire of a year.\u00a0 Go vote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To put it mildly, 2020 has not been a very good year for most people.\u00a0 I know folks who got married, had babies, got promotions, and other good things, but for most of us this has been a year we can&#8217;t wait to forget.
