{"id":3643,"date":"2021-05-10T17:15:23","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T22:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beckypalmer.wpengine.com\/?p=3643"},"modified":"2021-05-09T18:49:32","modified_gmt":"2021-05-09T23:49:32","slug":"a-little-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beckypalmer.me\/?p=3643","title":{"rendered":"A Little Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We all have things we support.\u00a0 Candidates for office.\u00a0 Sports teams.\u00a0 Charities \/ causes.\u00a0 Brands whose visions we agree with.<\/p>\n<p>But what does the word &#8220;support&#8221; mean to you?\u00a0 Merriam-Webster gives 6 definitions for the verb support (also 3 for the noun).\u00a0 They are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to endure bravely or quietly &#8211; to bear<\/li>\n<li>to promote the cause or interests of<\/li>\n<li>to pay the costs of &#8211; to maintain<\/li>\n<li>to hold up or serve as a prop for<\/li>\n<li>to keep from fainting or losing courage<\/li>\n<li>to keep (something) going<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why is the definition important?\u00a0 Because we&#8217;ve all seen this word used quite a bit lately, but it&#8217;s not being used correctly.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve all seen the &#8220;Support Law Enforcement&#8221; posts\/ signs.\u00a0 On the surface that seems like a lovely sentiment.\u00a0 Being an officer of the law is an important job.\u00a0 BUT, by &#8220;support&#8221; it seems that what they are really saying is more along the lines of &#8220;Never question law enforcement&#8221;.\u00a0 &#8220;They are more infallible than the Pope&#8221;. &#8220;Everyone in this line of work is perfect&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This is, of course, ridiculous.\u00a0 Police officers are humans, just like the rest of us. They have good days and bad days.\u00a0 They make mistakes.\u00a0 And, just like in any other job, there are a certain percentage of them who should be in a different line of work.\u00a0\u00a0Officers of the law deserve to be respected, but they also need to be held accountable when they betray that trust.
