Remember hobbies?\u00a0 When we could just do a fun activity or create something for fun and maybe to share with those closest to us?\u00a0 Hobbies are good and healthy and a great way to relive stress.\u00a0 Hobbies cost money, sure, but that’s OK because we get enjoyment out of them.<\/p>\n
When did hobbies become nothing but a gateway to a “side hustle”?<\/p>\n
I get that some people dream all their lives about running their own businesses and\/ or taking their blog or jewelry or sewing skills “to the next level”. But the pressure do so on people who are not interested in that has been crazy lately.\u00a0 Any time someone posts a cake or a quilt or anything handmade online most of the comments are “You should sell those!!”<\/p>\n
I have a friend who makes amazing cupcakes and cookies.\u00a0 Her frostings are, no lie, the best I’ve had since my grandmother passed.\u00a0 And EVERY TIME she shares her baked goods she’s told she should quit her job and open a bakery.\u00a0 She has no desire to do so- says it would take all the joy out of baking.\u00a0 And she’s right.<\/p>\n
I cannot count the number of times I’ve been asked about making money from my blog.\u00a0 I don’t need or want that.\u00a0 I don’t want to be beholden to anyone on what I can write about or how I need to present myself.\u00a0 And while some Sunday afternoons I don’t find writing “joyful”, I enjoy the hell out of doing this overall as nothing more than cheap therapy and a creative outlet.<\/p>\n
A lot of people re-thought their priorities in 2020.\u00a0 I know people who did make the leap to start or expand their own businesses.\u00a0 I know people who lost their jobs and went back to school and are now starting out in brand new careers in their 40s.\u00a0 I also know people who took early retirement last year, and people who decided the little extra income they got from a second job wasn’t worth it and quit it to spend more time on the things and people that really matter to them.<\/p>\n
The point is, if you are happiest with 2 side hustles plus a full time job you do you.\u00a0 Far be it from me to get in your way.\u00a0 But it’s important to understand that not everyone is wired that way.\u00a0 Some of us just want to create for fun.\u00a0 And that’s OK too.<\/p>\n
