{"id":4718,"date":"2023-10-16T17:15:01","date_gmt":"2023-10-16T22:15:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beckypalmer.me\/?p=4718"},"modified":"2023-10-08T20:51:35","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T01:51:35","slug":"thats-obsolete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beckypalmer.me\/?p=4718","title":{"rendered":"That&#8217;s Obsolete?!?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s said that the only thing in this world that is constant is change.\u00a0 \u00a0Technology advances seemingly at the speed of light, rendering things that were cutting edge just a few years ago obsolete now.<\/p>\n<p>Along with things becoming obsolete, skills do too.\u00a0 \u00a0No one needs to know how to operate a telephone switchboard or send a telegraph anymore.\u00a0 No one is getting hired to be a town crier.\u00a0 But there are a lot more recent skills that are quickly going the way of the Dodo bird too, and you probably have a few of them.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most commonly listed skills that will be obsolete soon include cursive handwriting and driving a manual transmission car.\u00a0 \u00a0Other skills that aren&#8217;t useful anymore- or soon won&#8217;t be- include reading a paper map, adjusting the &#8220;rabbit ears&#8221; on top of the TV, using a pay phone, and using a slide rule.<\/p>\n<p>I personally am hanging on to excellent 10 key skills.\u00a0 But only with my left hand.\u00a0 It stems back to my retail days which were so long ago we didn&#8217;t have barcode scanners.\u00a0 Yes, I&#8217;m that old.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t remember anymore why I only keyed in numbers left handed but I&#8217;m sure I had a good reason at the time.\u00a0 Do I need that anymore?\u00a0 Nope.\u00a0 Does anyone?\u00a0 Probably not.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not always a bad thing when something isn&#8217;t useful anymore.\u00a0 I find cursive handwriting to be complete and utterly useless. Even when it&#8217;s done well it&#8217;s very difficult to read, and usually it&#8217;s not done well.\u00a0 There is no reason to keep it around. And yes I will die on this hill.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">But some things make me a little sad.\u00a0 There is something unsettling about knowing you are the last generation who will use a physical dictionary or a give someone a personalized burned CD.\u00a0 \u00a0But i suppose the last town criers and Pony Express riders felt that way too.\u00a0 Time marches on no matter how much we don&#8217;t want it to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What out of date skills are you possess?\u00a0 Which ones are you sad to see go?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s said that the only thing in this world that is constant is change.\u00a0 \u00a0Technology advances seemingly at the speed of light, rendering things that were cutting edge just a few years ago obsolete now.
