As 2017 finally draws to a close there are all kinds of lists of both the best of and the worst of 2017. Next week I will be sharing a list of some good things that came out of this dumpster fire of a year, but this week I’m listing the top 5 things I am hoping and praying we can say goodbye to in 2017.
#1 Willful ignorance. When did throwing middle school science out the window become a badge of honor? I’m looking at you, anti vaxxers, flat Earth believers, climate change deniers and the like. You all look like idiots. And while we’re at it- some folks need to re-take middle school civics and try to wrap their heads around the fact that free speech doesn’t just apply to people you agree with. Which leads me into….
#2 (Political) Party over everything. Both sides of the aisle are guilty of this. Best case scenario, you’re so naive you actually believe that political parties serve any useful function beyond fundraising. Worst case, you are just too lazy to fact check anybody. And don’t even get me started on “fake news” i.e. “I don’t like this so I’m going to cover my eyes and ears and pretend it’s not there”. Not a good look on anyone.
#3 Second hand rage. You can’t be more upset over something than the group of folks supposedly being offended are. Best example is non-military people who were very concerned the military was being dishonored by the NFL player peaceful pregame protests. Too bad none of them took the time to actually talk to any current military member or vet – they would have discovered they weren’t offended at all. See also Rihanna being asked why she didn’t use any transgendered models to promote her new makeup line. Not a single transgendered person asked her that – only overly worried “allies”. There are plenty of actual things to be upset about- there is no need to manufacture more.
#4 The “war on Christmas” and “War on Christians”. Neither of these are real. As a Christian I apologize for the exceptionally non Christ like things some folks are doing. There is nothing in my Bible about demanding to be greeted in a certain way, or demanding special treatment in the workplace, or defending Nazis, or being the bedroom gatekeeper, or allowing domestic abuse. God is love. Jesus Loves Me. He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands. This is what we teach our children. How that gets turns into tantrums and hate I truly don’t understand. I assure you that most Christians aren’t like the Duggars or the Westboro “Baptist Church” or any of the other loons you see on TV.
#5 Over Instragramming EVERYTHING. Yes, your wedding was beautiful. Yes, your dinner looked yummy. Yes, that vacation looks fun. Yes, your child’s ball team did great. But I don’t need (or want) to see 1,000,000,000,000 pictures of it. Neither does almost anyone else. Really. Post a couple pics and save the rest for your grandmother. Except the dinner pics- she doesn’t want to see those either. NO ONE CARES what you had for dinner. I cannot stress that enough.
Here’s hoping 2018 is the year common sense and intelligence become fashionable it’s certainly been a while! Do you have any pet peeves of 2017 I missed? Let me know so we can commiserate together!
