The Club

I am currently (hopefully) recovering from a bout with viral gastroenteritis. I will spare the gory details but let’s just say the highlight of my day so far as been that I have been able to eat a handful of crackers without any major ill effects.
While at my doctor appointment yesterday the nurse read in my chart that I had a hysterectomy last spring. She is going to be having one soon herself and had a zillion questions for me. She is the second nurse at my clinic who is in this boat. When I was in the hospital I think all my nurses I had (except Josh) had also had the same procedure. A couple months ago I went to women’s Bible Study and so many women were sharing their hysterectomy stories that one woman who hadn’t been through it said she was actually jealous and that she wanted to have the procedure done too!

I had absolutely no idea how big of a club I was joining last spring. While I don’t intend to let one surgery or the fact that I now have one less non- essential body part define me there is something strangely comforting about knowing how many other women have been down the same road. It has also made it easier for me to actually admit that I did indeed have a hysterectomy. It’s not exactly dinner conversation but for a while I could barely say the word out loud and that is just plain silly in the year 2009.
