World Diabetes Day

Today is World Diabetes Day.

Why November 14th?   Because today is the birthday of the Canadian scientist Sir Frederick Banting, who among his many accomplishments is that he was the co-discoverer of insulin and the first person who use it to in humans.

The education movement of this day is spearheaded by the International Diabetes Federation.  Every year they choose a different theme, this year’s theme is Women and Diabetes.  They are highlighting issues/ concerns specific to women including gestational diabetes, the dangers of type 1 diabetes in pregnancy and the increased risk of cardiac health issues in type 2 diabetics.   If you want to find out more about this organization and their work you can visit them at https://www.idf.org/

As I”ve mentioned many times before, I do have diabetes myself, as does my father.  I’m thankful there are organizations like IDF championing for me and everyone else with this condition.   Chances are you know several folks with diabetes as well, so please take a moment to educate yourself on this condition today.
