New Year, Same You

I don’t do New Years Resolutions.  They are overrated.

The calendar turning from December 31st to January 1st isn’t magical.   You are still the same person you were yesterday, and the day before that.  You’ll still be the same person tomorrow.  My long-suffering former shrink once told me “Wherever you go, there you are”.  And that’s true whether that move is physical or otherwise.

There is a lot of pressure in today’s society to constantly be running, improving, striving for more.  There’s nothing inherently wrong with a desire for self-improvement, but it can become overwhelming and exhausting trying to measure up to what society, your family, or anyone else thinks you should be.

If you truly want to make a change to your diet or exercise regimen, go for it.  If you truly want to write the great American novel or start that new business or go back to school, go for it.  You don’t have to wait for a magical day to get started!

But before you get started, make sure it’s what YOU want, and not what you think you should want, or what someone else tells you to want (excluding doctor’s orders of course).   It’s OK to not want to be a CEO or the President or a Double Diamond level whatever.  It’s OK to be content.  It’s OK to just be yourself, today and every day.
