Today is Pi day!
Pi, of course, is that never-ending number that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. In non-geek terms that means every circle is 3.14159265… (etc. to infinity) bigger around than it is across. It’s very important to the study of math and specifically geometry.
Pi is just fun. It’s an irrational number, fun just to say and also meaning that there is no pattern to it when calculated out. It has been calculated out 2.7 trillion digits (yes, that’s trillion with a t) and no pattern emerged so I think it’s pretty safe to say none ever will. Memorizing the first digits of Pi has become a crazy competition sport. The current record holder for memorizing Pi rattled off just north of 70,000 digits. Why, I have no idea.
How to celebrate Pi day? Why, with PIE! Or, memorizing Pi to 80,000 digits I suppose, but which sounds more fun to you?
