Why am I Doing This?

2 Comments on Why am I Doing This?

After finding out I have a blog most people ask what it’s about.  As I’ve discussed before, that can be a tricky question to answer, but I try.  http://beckypalmer.thecomputerguy.bz/2016/03/whats-a-knotty-thing/

But even trickier is when people ask WHY I have one.  The simplest answer is that it’s my hobby.  I don’t do arts and crafts.  I don’t enjoy cooking.  I do like going on the occasional trip, but the older I get the more I enjoy quiet evenings at home.  I do also play the clarinet with two different community bands, but this blog is a far larger time commitment.

But that’s not really a good or complete answer to the question.  Why do I do this? Why do I often spend part of my Sunday afternoons staring at a blank screen willing words to magically appear?

It’s not for money.  I have never, and do not ever intend to, blog for profit.  I do not want to feel beholden to anyone or have anyone feel they have the right to color/ influence my writing.    I’m too honest to be able to say I’ve experienced the best doughnut / pair of leggings / mascara/ etc. I’ve ever had 20 times a year.  I have nothing against folks who do blog/ vlog professionally, but it’s just not anything that interests me.

It’s not for relaxation.  While I DO enjoy it (most days) I spend more time than I care to admit stressing over writing topics, looking for the “perfect” images to attach to each post, and just trying to make everything work right (Jetpack is both a blessing and a curse).  And there’s nothing quite as un-fun as seeing a typo 2 minutes AFTER your post goes live.

So why am I doing this?  While I’m probably still trying to answer that to myself, the best answer is because it’s a creative release.  It lets me get the stuff rattling around my head out of my skull and out into the universe. It’s good for my mental health.  It lets me work on myself in real time.  It allows me to interact with folks, many of whom I’ve never met in person.  It allows me to expand my own horizons by doing research on topics that interest me that I probably wouldn’t take the time to do otherwise.  It’s been an amazing journey and one I look forward to continuing for a long time to come.

Thank you for joining me on this journey.  I appreciate you more than you know and I hope you also benefit from visiting my little corner of the interwebs and will continue to do so,
