Pink Day

Today is Pink Day.

While that would be cool, today is NOT designated to honor the pop singer Pink (who I adore).  Today is a day to take back power from bullies.

This day was created to celebrate the actions of  two high school students named David Shepard and Travis Price in 2007.  They decided to help a classmate who was being bullied simply for wearing a pink shirt. They organized a virtual army of students in pink shirts – male and female –  to show at school the next day to make their point.

As someone who was bullied in school this really hits home for me.  I know for a fact back in the 80s most high school aged kids would be scared to try something like this, and reading about things like this gives me some hope for the future.

Of course wearing pink is the easiest way to celebrate.  But if you have a chance take a minute to talk to a child in your life about bullying too.  The scars from “kids being kids” can last a lifetime, and in some cases even lead to suicide.  Nobody should have to fear going to school like I did.
