I had really hoped that between the public backlash against the January 6th riots and Joe Biden being sworn in as the 45th President of the United States that some semblance of normalcy could come back to American politics. That we’d stop having to deal with friends and relatives who had bought into some of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories ever to see the light of day.
Alas, those hopes were quickly dashed. Sure, for a few days all was quiet and a few former members of the Qanon cult actually came out and said “If Trump had just said once it was all crap none of this would have happened”. But soon enough new rumors, in some cases even more insane that the previous ones started circulating. Now apparently Trump is still really the President and the President Biden we see is a robot, or Trump is coming back into office on March 4th. Or possibly 6th.
I still have some hope that in time Trump cult will taper off. That more and more people will come to realize that none of the things that were supposed to happen in the past few months actually happened. That they are a laughingstock to everyone else here in the US, and making the United States a laughingstock on the world stage.
But I will admit this past weekend made it harder. There are folks in Florida who spend last weekend literally worshipping a golden statue and sitting around a Nazi inspired altar. And while that was going on other folks were losing their damn minds over Mr. Potato Head. I did not have either of those things on my 2021 Bingo card.
I’m not sure what happens next, other than that Trump is not going magically become the President again later this week. That is a pretty low bar for a successful week, but at this point, quite frankly, I’ll take it.
