Why You Shouldn’t Do This

There are times when writer’s block is strong.  When I stare at a blinking cursor and wonder why on Earth I tell people I love blogging (even though I really do).  When this happens I tend to Google things like “fun blog post ideas”.  This rarely leads to a good idea, but hope springs eternal.

Today one of the lists I stumbled upon had a ideas on how to make money blogging and why you love blogging for money.  My gut instinct was “I’m so glad I don’t do that”.  So, today I’m going to tell you why I’m glad I DON’T try to make money from my blog.

Simply put, I am free to be me.  I don’t have to think about anyone else’s needs/ direction/ feelings.  I don’t have to worry about offending a sponsor.  I don’t have to worry about any conflict of interests.

Even better, I can change my mind!  I have a lot of old posts that feature ideas I no longer hold.  Sure, I could go back and delete/ reword them, but I don’t.  I am proud of the journey I’m on and proud of my growth.  I’m not afraid to say that I’ve made mistakes and I’ve learned from them.  I’m not afraid to say that I’m not a finished product, but I’m working on it.

I’ve had quite a few people ask me over the years if they should start a blog.  I’ve told every single one of them yes.  I’ve also told every single one of them to do it for the love of it/ love of their chosen topic and not to make money.   And I’ll continue to give that advise to anyone who asks.  Writing has been an incredible method of therapy for me, and is the number one reason I do this.   And I know I never could have gotten here if I had dollar signs handing over my head.
