Casual Racism

2023 is the first year that Juneteenth was a Federal holiday.  If you spend 2 seconds on social media last week you couldn’t avoid all the snarky comments.  Most people were smart enough to not just come out and say they didn’t see the point of marking an important day in black history, but they didn’t try to hard to hide it either.

Up to a point, that’s not their fault.  It’s not like we learned anything about black or brown history in our American history classes, or even our World history classes.  If your world history was anything like mine, it might as well have been called European history.  There may have been one chapter about the entire continent of Asia, but 95% of the textbook was about the conquests and achievements of white people.  And the only mentions of Africa were in terms of who claimed what land for what European country.

But.  It’s 2023.  Ignorance is not an excuse.  By definition, everyone on social media has access to the internet and there are TONS of resources available to fill in the gaps in your knowledge.  But you have to actually want to learn.  And that is 100% within your control.

So lets be better humans, shall we?  Racism is SO last century.
