Reunited and it Feels So What?

Class reunions.  Some people love them.  Some people hate them.

Last weekend was my husband’s 40th class reunion.  I had a good time and learned a few new things about Pat!  One big conversation topic of the night was the low turnout, and that attendance has been steadily declining over the past few reunions.   No one really had a good idea how to turn that around.  No one asked if class reunions as a whole are on their way out, but I feel like I couldn’t have been the only one who thought it.

If you had asked me in 2019 if I thought class reunions would be a thing in 10 years I would have said absolutely not.  The internet and specifically social media- have made them a dinosaur.

Then COVID happened.

I’ve heard more than one person say that the pandemic really made them appreciate in person events again.  You can’t hug someone over Facetime.   You can’t hold a hand or give a kiss via Zoom.  People are appreciating going to big events like weddings again.

But does that carry over to class reunions?

Overall, I still think the answer is “no”.  I can see them still being an important event for boomers and older Gen Xers, but I don’t believe they will ever become a big event for Millennials, and certain not Gen Zers.  I doubt that in 20 years anyone under the age of 65 will organize any in person events for reunions anymore.

What do you think?  Do you think class reunions are still relevant?  Or maybe you never thought they were to begin with?
