Oreo Update

It’s been about 3 months since we brought Oreo into our home so I figured folks would like an update on how things are going.

Overall, things are going great!  Oreo settled in like he’d been here forever in just a few hours.  We never went through a “hiding under the bed” phase of adjusting to a new space.  He was comfortable hanging out with us and our other cats virtually immediately.  He and Lilly are great friends and they play together every day.  Oreo and Boots are still negotiating their relationship, but we are making progress.

We were out of practice dealing with crazy energy here at Casa Palmer so that was a bit of an eye opener for us.  Boots was already an adult when she came to live with us.  Lilly was technically a kitten when we met her, but she was pregnant so most of her energy went to growing babies and not the zoomies.  Oreo gets the zoomies all the time!  We have put away a lot of breakable items until he calms down a little.  Whenever that will be.  He hasn’t slowed down one bit yet.

Oreo does have his weird little quirks – most of them are pretty cute.  #1 He rarely meows, but normally he squeaks.  The best way to describe his sound is a large dog’s chew toy.   #2 He LOVES to carry toys around in his mouth, which means we occasionally find them in our bed, in our bath tub, or in the laundry hamper.  He throws toys into his water bowl.  I’ve read about cats doing this, but never had one that did.  The other day he threw one in the toilet.  It was a red toy that that damn near gave Pat a heart attack when he discovered it.   #3 He loves sleeping on a box of paperwork that’s been sitting in our living room for ages.  We have all kinds of soft, cozy places for him to sleep, but no- cardboard works for him.  #4 When he is confused about something his heads bops all over like a bobblehead. It’s adorable.

Oreo LOVES the kitchen.  I assume his foster family must have fed him in the kitchen- if anyone is in the kitchen he is right there with you.  I suspect he got a little “people food” too- he is very interested in all kinds of food and especially loves cheese and ice cream.  And no, they don’t upset his tummy.

We didn’t weigh Oreo when we first got him and I wish we would have.  But even without that I’m confident he had doubled in size in 3 months!  He recently had his first trip to his new vet and he already weighs 7 lbs!  I think he’s always going to be a slender cat, but I do wonder exactly how long he is going to get.  I think Lilly wonders the same thing while they are wrestling- ha!

It’s been a great 3 months with the little goofball.  I’m looking forward to many happy years together. I’ve told Pat a few times he picked the right kitty for us.  But it’s a two way street- I think Oreo picked us too.  And I think everyone made the right decision.
