What a Drag

No Comments on What a Drag

Full disclosure-  Saturday morning I wrote a scathing post about the outrage over the drag queen performance at the Olympic opening ceremonies.  But then by Saturday night it came out that the supposed mockery of Da Vinci’s painting of the Last Supper was completely misplaced because the scene they were portraying was actually an ancient Greece bacchanal.  Which makes WAY more sense given the Greek roots of the Olympic games.   But a few hot headed morons insisted they were right and the actual creator of the performance was lying about his vision. Because that’s what artists do.  Snort.

Sunday morning I rewrote the entire post, focusing on the history of drag itself along with the amount of ignorance and hubris it takes to keep screaming you’re right even when faced with clear and concise proof that you aren’t.

Sunday afternoon I deleted that post entirely.  I don’t want to give the hateful minority any more of my time or energy.   But I’m finding it really hard to shake off my frustration.

So for now I’m just going to say this.

Art you don’t like or understand has the right to exist.  That includes the art of drag performance and art featuring items you view as sacred.  When the artist tells you what their art means, that’s what it means.  You don’t get to decide that for them.  The world does not revolve around you.
