With all the county fairs going on this week this is a perfect time for this holiday. It’s Cow Appreciation Day!
I grew up on a dairy farm, so cows put a roof over my head and food on my table as a child. It’s pretty easy to appreciate that. My sister and I just recently recalled the night we took my now former in-laws who were from Buffalo New York into the cow barn at a county fair and the hilarity that ensued. I wonder if some of those 4-Hers have ever laughed harder than they did that night in 1994.
But for those of you who didn’t get to witness that evening there are plenty of other ways to appreciate cows today. The most obvious is the consumption of dairy products. Yogurt, cheese, ice cream- the list goes on for all the delicious options available.
If you are lactose intolerant perhaps you can enjoy photos or artwork of cattle. And don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Most nativity scenes include a cow. The Iowa State fair has a butter sculpture every year- themes have included Caitlyn Clark, Harry Potter, the Field of Dreams, and Star Trek. And one item that is there every year is yes, a butter cow.
So however you it, love a cow today!
