I’ve been a Weird Al fan for decades. Not only is he funny but he’s a really talented musician and song writer. Sadly, because of his chosen genre he doesn’t get the credit he deserves for either of these very real talents.
Last week I got my very own copy of his newest album “Alpocalypse” and I have been enjoying it ever since. I got the deluxe version that came with a bonus DVD with 10 music videos. Sadly, the video for “Perform This Way” isn’t included but otherwise I consider it money well spent.
I’ve already mentioned the “big” parody on this album- “Perform This Way” which is based on “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga. It’s hilarious both for both his lyrics and the way he manages to mock Lady Gaga at the same time. If you haven’t seen the video yet go Google it. If you know anything about Lady Gaga- even if you are a die hard fan of hers- you will laugh out loud at least once. There are plenty of other great parodies on this album as well including “TMZ” based on Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” which mocks the paparazzi and “Party in the CIA” which is obviously based on “Party the the USA” by Miley Cyrus and is one of my favorite songs on on this album.
As always Weird Al includes original tracks along with his parodies and I have to say that I like the ones on this album better than the ones on his last few outings. While I don’t know why Al chose to dedicate a song to Charles Nelson Riley “CNR” is a pretty funny song. Another one of my listen to over and over tracks is “Skipper Dan”. This song follows the career of a wannabe actor who winds up working as Disneyland. It’s strangely catchy and from what I’ve read online does an excellent job of describing the woes of the actual employees who work on the Jungle Cruise ride.
Another feature on every Weird Al album is the polka medley. This is also one of my favorite items on every album and this time includes the polka-ized version of songs by P!nk, Flo Rida, Justin Bieber and Jamie Foxx. The medleys are always amusing to me and this one is no exception.
I can honestly say I am enjoying this album as a whole more than any Weird Al album in a while. The parodies are dead on, the original songs are fun and catchy and there aren’t any songs that I listen to and say “huh?” like I sometimes have in the past. If you need a quick pick me up you can’t go wrong with “Alpocalypse”
