Black Cat Day

Today is Black Cat Day!  Every day is Black Cat Day at my house because I share my house with two of them- Hershey (14) and Pumpkin (10 and the cover model for this post). But today everyone can participate!

Black cats weren’t always considered unlucky.  The ancient Egyptians worshiped all cats but held black cats in special regard.  Ancient Celtic pagan lore states that black cats are fairies in disguise.  However, by the time of the American revolution black cats were associates with witches and demons.  They were usually killed on sight, and folks who kept them as pets were often punished as well.

While no one actually thinks that black cats are the tools of Satan any longer, the myth that they are bad luck continues to this day.  Black cats are still the least likely to be adopted from animal shelters and the most likely to be the victim of abuse, especially around Halloween time.   This is not OK people!

If you are looking for a new companion animal I urge you to take a look at the tiny black panthers at your local shelter.  Even if you aren’t looking for a new friend right now, you can go pet the kitties or donate at your local shelter.  And, perhaps even more important, you can help spread the word that black cats aren’t black luck!
