No Apples Here

A few days ago I got a new cell phone.  I’d had my previous one for 3 or 4 years- which is insanely long and a personal record for me I’m sure.

I got a Motorola Edge.  I picked it after doing a significant amount of research because of its high ratings in battery life specifically, but it also got good marks in ease of usage, which is becoming more important the older I get.

The day after I got it I had several people tell me I should have gotten an iPhone instead.  I have no desire to get an iPhone now or ever.  And I’m going to tell you why.

#1 I’ve had Android phones for years and it would be a nightmare and a half to switch.  I was up and running in less than 15 minutes after I took the phone out of the box.  It would take hours to recreate everything on iOs.  No thank you.

#2 Android phones are much most customizable.  I have almost unlimited options in how my home screen looks, how I organize my apps, what widgets I want.  The Google Play store has over twice as many options as the Apple app store, and several times more free apps as well.  As an example-  in my line of work I use a barcode scanner frequently.  There were dozens, if not hundreds, of different apps available to me.  One of my coworkers, who has an iPhone, borrows my phone when she needs to scan a barcode because there are no free apps available for her.

#3 Phone choice.  Apple rolls out 2 or 3 phone options a year.  For Android, there are many, many different manufacturers you can choose from, and most of them offer several models.  Whether you want a bare bones model or one with all the bells and whistles, you will have plenty of options to pick from.

#4 Worldwide acceptance.  Sure, here in the US you’ll see a lot of iPhones, but worldwide over 70% of smart phones run on Android.  So I’m hardly alone in my preference.

#5 iPhone users. Yes, I admit that not ALL people with iPhones are like this, but there are are significant number of people with iPhones who think they are superior to the rest of us because they have an iPhone and/ or are brand loyal to Apple products.  It’s pathetic and I have no desire to join their ranks.

How about you?  What’s your preference?
