Iceland on the Horizon

I’ve written quite a bit about the joys of solo travel – yes, even for married folks.  I think it’s unhealthy to think you can’t go anywhere alone, but that’s another topic for another day.

Today I’m talking about a trip that my husband and I will be taking together.  We’ve decided that in 2026 to celebrate our 20th anniversary we will be going to Iceland!   I had mentioned that I wanted to go there and was stunned – but thrilled- when he said he would like to go too!

Yes it’s a ways off, but that’s a good thing.  Iceland is not a cheap destination, and neither of us currently have passports.

I have been spending a lot of time already researching popular tourist attractions, best time of year to visit, how to get around (they don’t have Uber or Lyft there!), etc.  I have even downloaded an app to start learning Icelandic.  Fun fact- Icelandic is a Tier 4 language according to experts.  That means it’s one of the hardest languages for English speakers to learn that still use the same alphabet (Type 5- the hardest- are languages like Japanese and Arabic).  Fun fact #2 98% of Icelanders speak at least some English, and since it’s taught in schools a large portion of the population is fluent in it.  Which is good news given my failure to teach myself Spanish a few years ago…

Do you have a big adventure on the horizon and/ or that you are at least talking about?  Maybe it’s a girls trip or maybe it’s a family vacation or maybe it’s a second honeymoon (or in our case, our first).

OR, have you been to Iceland?  I would love to talk to people who have been to find out what they loved and what they would have done differently.

Iceland or bust!
