Someone’s Got Their Head up Their Butker

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’d heard all the hubbub about Kansas City Chief’s kicker Harrison Butker’s commencement speech at the Benedictine College in Atchinson Kansas.

The usual suspects are complaining that he is being criticized for “speaking out about being a Christian”.  Which is, of course, complete and utter crap.  If Butker had given a speech about what Jesus has done for him and urged the graduates to take Christ with them into the world no one would even know he’d given a speech at all.  Fun fact- he only mentioned Jesus three times the entire speech.

What got most people riled up was his statements about women.  Butker said women should not be thinking about their future careers, but instead they should be “most excited your upcoming marriage and children you will bring into the world”.  He also said that his wife Isabel’s life “truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and mother” and that she’s so happy she has no career of her own.

That is already quite a lot to unpack.  But upon reading the entire transcript of the speech  – which you can read here in case you think I’m making this stuff up – https://www.ncregister.com/news/harrison-butker-speech-at-benedictine  I found statements that are just as bad that aren’t getting any press at all.   Being a Catholic he spoke out against ANY kind of birth control, but also fertility treatments- which seemed like an odd contradiction to me.  He spoke out again all COVID restrictions (because that makes sense in 2024), President Biden, and any and all church leaders (maybe even the Pope?) for embracing any modernization with the Catholic church.  He called for a return to Mass in Latin, stated that church leaders shouldn’t post pics of their dogs on social media (yes really), and called for a firm rejection of any inclusion of the LGBT+ community the the family of Christ.

Benedictine College itself has released a statement condemning the speech.  They stated – correctly I might add- that the Spirit of Christ should be all about coming together, not division. That should tell you all you need to know about what Christianity is supposed to be about.

In other words, Butker’s speech was SO unchristian that actual nuns disapproved of it.  I can’t think of any better argument against it than that.
