National Device Appreciation Day

Today we will not wring our hands about all the time we spend on our phones.  Today we celebrate everything our electronics have brought to our lives- it’s National Device Appreciation Day!

Do you remember the days before everyone had a cell phone?  How hard was it to get a hold of people when you really needed to- i.e. a death in the family or a car accident?

How about before everyone had a camera phone?  How many vacations, birthdays, etc. are lost to time because “the pictures didn’t turn out”?  My parents have no photos of their honeymoon.  Not because they didn’t take any, but either the roll of film was defective or something went awry during the development process.

Before social media?  How much harder was is to keep in touch with friends who wind up living hundreds or thousands of miles apart?  How much harder was it to plan get togethers with friends or family?  How much harder was it to discover new music, TV shows, or movies?

No, I’m not saying that there haven’t been downsides to all of this new technologies.  But just for a day, let’s think about the good it can – and has done for us.
