The Best Books I Read This Year

In case you hadn’t heard- book clubs – along with good old-fashioned books- are back!

I made the decision to get more books and less screens in my life a while back and I’m so glad I did.  If you missed that you can read about that here https://beckypalmer.me/?p=4856    And yes I have joined the book club at my library!

I gravitate toward murder mysteries/ thrillers but I do try to mix it up and add other genres including some non-fiction titles.  And I’m glad I did- some of the best books I read this year were NOT thrillers!  And only one of them was new this year- most have been out for ages now.  So without further ado,  here are the 5 best books I read this year:

#5 Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green.  Yes, the same John Green who wrote The Fault in Our Stars and other YA best sellers.  This is a non-fiction book about the impact of this disease through history and today.  It’s not as dry as it sounds- I promise!

#4 The President is Missing by James Patterson and Bill Clinton.   A thriller about a massive world wide cyber attack where the President becomes a suspect.  I don’t want to give more away but it’s a very good read!

#3 Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer.  A native American woman tells her story of marrying her PhD in Biology with her roots.  It is a beautiful read.

#2 The Guest List by Lucy Foley.  Anything by Lucy Foley is good!  A murder mystery in the style of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie- a group of people trapped by a storm from the rest of the world and people start dying.

#1 When Women were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill.  A fantasy story about a world were woman can turn into dragons.  It touches on sexism, government corruption and many other non-fun themes, but it such a way that you cannot put it down.  Fantasy is not a genre I usually read, but this book was amazing and I recommend it to everyone.

Honorable mentions include The Silent Patient by Alex Michalides, The Night Shift by Alex Finlay, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
