Pluto Day

Today is Pluto Day!

Today we celebrate the official discovery of the planet Pluto on this date in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh.

Fun fact- Pluto is NOT named after the Disney character, as has been widely suggested.  Instead, it is named after the Roman god of the underworld at the suggestion of Clyde’s 11 year old granddaughter, who was very interested in Roman mythology at the time.  This makes a lot more sense given that many of the moons of Jupiter have also been named after Roman gods, but apparently isn’t as good of a story.

So regardless if you think it should still be a planet or not (I do), take a minute today to celebrate this accomplishment in astronomy.  And maybe brush up on your Roman mythology as well- never know when that could come in useful!
